A Darwin man has found himself in a world of pain after drunkenly losing his keys and kicking in his front door - only to discover it was not his apartment.

The 28-year-old man turned up at the Smith Street apartment complex at 3.15am on Monday after a big night on the town and became concerned after 'hearing voices' inside.

One of the startled occupants wrestled the intoxicated intruder, before subduing him and calling police.

'That's what alcohol does — it helps you to make stupid decisions and forget your address,' Superintendent Louise Jorgensen said.

According to police, the man lived in an identical apartment next door and became confused in his drunken stupor.

'A fight started ... and the occupant managed to subdue the man and pin him down,' Supt Jorgenson told The ABC.

The man was taken into custody and spent the night sobering up at the Mitchell Street police headquarters.

He was later charged with criminal damage and will appear in Darwin Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
